New Balance 1890A Is For Grown Man Steppers

There’s a certain point in your sneaker journey where your taste starts moving differently.

You still love sneakers. You still clock what somebody has on their feet before anything else. You still know when a colourway is special. But the wardrobe has expanded. The trousers have gotten better. You own a few proper jackets now. You’ve discovered knitwear. You understand the power of a clean white tee and a great pair of pants. Somewhere along the way, getting dressed became less about wearing the loudest thing in the room.

That’s where the New Balance 1890A enters the chat. This feels like a grown man sneaker. Look at the shape and you can almost trace a line through different generations of footwear. There’s something about that moccasin-like upper that takes you back to the Grasshopper. If you grew up in South Africa, you know the shoe. Grasshoppers occupied that beautiful space between casual and smart. Your uncle had a pair. Your dad probably had a pair. Depending on how deep your sauce runs, you might have owned some too.

Then there’s the Wallabee. The Wallabee has always had a particular kind of cool. Hip-hop adopted it. Jamaican style embraced it. Streetwear never really let it disappear. Its beauty has always been in that slightly strange shape. The 1890A carries some of that same energy, especially around the toe and the way the upper sits on the foot.

New Balance takes those familiar ideas and drops them onto a technical sole. And there you have it. A sneaker for the homie who owns loafers now.

Then we get to the pair that really caught our attention. Snakeskin print across the upper. Pale yellow leather. Heavy black sole underneath. It’s a crazy combination but beautiful shoe.

There’s something beautifully old-school about snakeskin. It immediately makes you think of a man who takes getting dressed seriously. Maybe he has a leather jacket that gets better every year. Maybe he knows his tailor personally. Maybe he has one outrageous shirt that only comes out when the occasion calls for it.

That energy works perfectly on the 1890A. The snakeskin print gives the shoe character without taking away from what makes the silhouette interesting in the first place. You still see the moccasin. You still see the sneaker. You still get that slightly awkward shape that makes shoes like the Wallabee and Grasshopper so lovable. Except now there’s a little danger in there

The beauty is in how easily you can dress it. Put it underneath some olive fatigues with a white tee and you’re good. Wide black trousers and a knit? Done. Washed denim, crisp shirt, beautiful jacket? Easy. You could even get a little disrespectful and put them underneath a relaxed suit.

And thankfully our favourite sneaker plug got us. Archive put the 1890A on shelves, with the Morel and Black pair landing locally alongside the broader arrival of the silhouette.

That access matters because South African sneaker taste is becoming more adventurous. People want silhouettes with a story. Different textures. Strange shapes. Shoes that can become part of a wardrobe instead of just becoming another box stacked in the collection. Archive has been feeding that curiosity for years, and bringing something like the 1890A onto local shelves gives people another opportunity to experiment.

Because this shoe needs to be styled. It needs a good trouser or some raw denim. It needs texture around it. It needs somebody who understands that the outfit doesn’t have to shout for people to notice it. The snakeskin especially deserves that treatment. It’s a strange yet sophisticated shoe. A little bit Grasshopper, a little bit Wallabee a lot of New Balance. And somehow, snakeskin makes the whole situation even better. Grown man stepping and Archive got the plug.
