Archive is known to celebrate artists and different artforms. In this installation of the Artist Project, Sanele Qwabe came through and created some fire toy figures with Archive. We caught up with him to speak on his art, journey and his favourite things.

What’s your earliest memory when it comes to designing?

My earliest memory design was when I use to make small wire cars with my brother.

What would you say is the most unique part of your creation process?

I think the most unique part about my creation is my vision and personal human experience.

Do you have a consumer in mind when designing or is it solely a form of expression?

I’m usually design for myself. In a way to see if I can impress myself. And if my niece and nephews think I’m a cool uncle, my job is done.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face in toy design?

I personally don’t see any challenges. There is no greatness without obstacles

Being an artist, you are subjected to opinions and criticism, how do deal with or even incorporate it in your work?

I know who I am. And I know where I come from, and I also know that there is no such thing in life as pleasing everybody so that gives me solace.

What are your favourite materials to work with and why?

I think the most that I’m excited about these days are my paints. Experimenting on which colours work with which design.

Do you ever study industry trends when it comes to your art?

I personally don’t think trends align with purpose so if you think what you are doing can be dictated by trends, then you as an artist have failed.

How did the collab with Archive come about?

The Collab with Archive started with my homie Rash. Through meetings and phone calls on how we can do this big.

How does your community inform what you do?

My community is tied with my values that I hold dear, and that is mainly integrity and family. So I create through those 2 things in mind mostly, including when I do business as well.

What do you want people to take away from your art?

I think a takeaway from my artist is that I hope the sentiment I have for my work will also be shared by my collectors.

How do you envision the future of toy design evolving with technology?

I hope things get even more outrageous in a cool and intentional way.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a toy designer?

I think the best advice I could give is to START.
